A Guide to His Life, Works, and Ideas
[This essay was originally posted to YouAreThat.org.]
Introduction
Many of the ideas at Realize! are derived from the work of Joseph Campbell. This page serves as an introduction to his life, works, and ideas. (See a personal reflection on the importance of Campbell to my thinking.)
Life
- A Chronology of Campbell's life (based on a longer chronology found in the front of The Hero's Journey: Joseph Campbell on his Life and Work, edited by Phil Cousineau)
- A sort of "CV" originally found on the JCF site (similar in some ways to the Chronology, but seemingly written by Campbell)
- A brief biography (on the Joseph Campbell Foundation website). The Joseph Campbell Foundation (JCF) continues Campbell's work.
- See the "Biographical" section below for works about Campbell's life
Works
I own most of Campbell's published works, and have been "processing" them for years. In my "Works" section, I have listed the Tables of Contents of most of the works; as time goes by I will fill these in with annotations.
Wondering what to read first?
Undoubtedly, Joseph Campbell and the Power of Myth (print, illustrated version, DVD, VHS, or audio tapes or CDs) would be the best place to start. The posthumous books edited from the Joseph Campbell Audio Collection are easy reading (having been lectures originally). There are several books of essays that can be read in part or in whole; and finally--when you're ready for it--the two major works, The Hero with a Thousand Faces and the four-volume The Masks of God. (But to tell the truth, you might START with Hero! It's a great read.)
Ideas
Joseph Campbell's ideas permeate this site (as they permeate my thinking). But beginning here, I explore some of Campbell's more pertinent ideas in detail. A brief summary is presented to start with; more to come.
