This photo was taken at a Halloween party at Cal-America Education Institute in L.A.'s Koreatown, where I worked from October 2003-January 2004.
Yoshi was a great guy. He had come to L.A. to study jiujitsu (ironic?) and was literally an ass-kicker. He often showed up with fresh cuts on his face from a recent bout.
Nan (the sweetest manager you could ever work for) loved holidays and celebrations. So she declared that any student who came to the Halloween party without a costume would have to wear face paint. This was Yoshi's treatment.
After five years in Japan, I can say Yoshi was one of the coolest Japanese guys I ever taught. His presence here signifies my experiences in Japan and at Cal-America.
